Cactus leather?

Bare Fashion is very excited for Po-zu they have just created a plant-based, cruelty-free vegan sneaker using Cactus and Bamboo. I know right, it sounds delicious!

I've included some information directly from their press release below as I find the details so fascinating but if that's not for you all you need to know is that Po-Zu has launch a crowd funder campaign so that you can pre-order a pair of cactus vegan sneakers or boots for March 2021.

The nopal cactus grows on dry arid land otherwise overlooked, without pesticides and the need for additional irrigation. Cactus leather is a cruelty-free, sustainable alternative, without any toxic chemicals, phthalates and PVC. It's worth watching the video  about cactus farmers Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez, from Mexico they developed vegan leather made from nopal a  type of cactus.

So what's in the POZ shoe?

Cotton:

  • Our laces are made from GOTS certified organic cotton. GOTS certification is the global standard to ensure organic status of textiles from harvesting through to environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing and labelling.

Cactus leather:

  • Cactus leather is a cruelty-free, sustainable alternative, without any toxic chemicals, phthalates and PVC.
  • Cactus leather represents a phenomenal breakthrough for the fashion industry. Until now, alternatives to leather contained plastics, to make them durable and increase their strength and wearability. To make them behave more like real leather. Cactus leather is a cruelty-free sustainable alternative, without any toxic chemicals, phthalates and PVC.

Bamboo:

  • Our lining is made from bamboo, keeping your feet fresh and dry.

Sugarcane:

  • The foam sole is derived from sugarcane a plant that is grown in abundance and captures CO2 from the air, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, naturally cleansing our environment.
  • Our sole is made from an innovative bio based EVA resin, derived from Sugarcane, a fully renewable resource that grows quickly, and removes CO2 from the air, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and naturally cleansing our environment. Along with these attractive sustainability credentials, a key characteristic of bio-EVA is it’s lightness, and the ability to be flexible and resistant.
  • A key characteristic of bio-EVA is it’s lightness, and the ability to be flexible and resistant.
  • Until now, athletic shoes have been made using petroleum based EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) which will eventually end up in landfill, and can take up to 1,000 years to decompose. This bio-based EVA is a significant advance for the industry, and the world’s first carbon negative EVA polymer.
